Why make IBOH II eight years after the original, and what does "Back For Seconds" mean?

Honestly it just kinda landed that way. I met Blue Ave at an event in Denver and after we had a discussion on how I believe more artists could and should collaborate with beatmakers, we locked in and he sent me some beats.

I wrote to them and then just started mixing and as I was going through it, the project just gave the same vibe as the original. The textures, and the sounds, along with the way that I was approaching the mixes and concepts, all felt reminiscent of the original. But rather than oranges and yellows, it felt like blues, and purples. Whatever that means.. Haha

“Back For Seconds” is a play on a few different concepts. One concept is that It’s the 2nd in the IBOH series. So you’re returning for seconds, however the other play is that if you’re on my email list you’ve had access to a version of the album. This is known as the “DSP version” which is the version that will be uploaded to DSP’s (Digital Streaming Platforms) like Spotify, Apple Music, etc..

One of my biggest gripes (and many other artists share in this sentiment) with the music industry is that to combat piracy these platforms were built to be the response, but they only pay fractions of a penny to the artist per stream. .003 cents on Spotify at this time. So going into this album I decided I wanted to find my tribe/listenership, and reward them with full songs. If DSP’s are only going to give a fraction of a penny per stream, I figure it’s fair to give a fraction of the song. Plus most people know whether they want to hear a full song within 10 seconds of listening, and if they do inevitably decide they want that song, they can jump in the transmission and get access to it. 

All that to say, coming back for seconds, meant coming back for the second verse/rest of the song as well. 

How is IBOH II different from the original IBOH, and what has changed about you as an artist?

Like I said, it felt more like blues and purples than reds and oranges. There's a certain grit to it that I think IBOH didn’t carry as much of. Less polish. Along with that the skits are meant to kinda give an understanding of where I’ve been since the original’s release, where the first one had no skits at all.

The Listening Experience

Why a silent disco listening party instead of a traditional release show?

Everything with this project has been meant to cultivate a calculated unique experience, and I wanted the listening party to do that as well. The silent disco aspect is to make it easier for people to really dig in and transport to this world being created. As for why not a traditional release show, I won’t get into the weeds too much, but I will say that my hope is that this party won’t be the only one, and I intend to do a show to celebrate the release too. So it’s neither this or that, but rather this and then that.

Why include art as part of the listening experience?

Several reasons. I grew up around art. My mom was a painter before going to nursing school when I was 5. She even had one of her paintings in the Denver Art Museum. I’ve always been really proud of her and she always surrounded me with art. So while I may identify as doing Alternative Hip-Hop I’m still an artist and really love all mediums.

Another reason is to add to the unique experience of the event. Listening parties are honestly incredibly awkward in my opinion. Asking people to come sit down in a room and listen to something you’ve created, while not asking for any input on the cultivation of it, as well as really dig into the project has always just felt weird and kinda hostage-y. I didn’t and don’t want that. Instead I wanted to give people a space to create their own art while experiencing mine. Imo it makes it almost more theirs at that point and I think that’s cool. Plus I’m excited to see what ways they're inspired by it.

The last reason I’ll give is similar to the previous question’s answer. I think a unique experience is important not only to be a standout event, but also to just want to be there in the first place. There’s a lot happening in the world, everything feels expensive, and with all the reasons to stay at home, I think giving people a reason, or a few, to put pants on is important.

The World Around the Album

Why is Colorado such an important part of IBOH II?

IBOH only had 1 Colorado beatmaker (S/O Trashmonkey Benny for making the beat for Sauce). All the features were Colorado artists though. Kinda right after I made IBOH I decided I wanted to work more with Colorado beatmakers more exclusively, which I really have since. CO Anthem, Coast To Coast, Gout, Squid Game, all of these were Colorado Beatmakers. So barring anything I do with SuperSon1cs, or beats that I’d purchased like right after IBOH, It’s primarily been Colorado. I don’t think it’s exclusively important to the project, but rather just where I come from. I think it’s great to work with people from all over, and If I find a beat from someone in Texas that I love, I’m not going to turn it down. I just find it important to continue to grow community in the state that I represent and come from.

What do you hope people feel when they leave?

I hope they feel like they, released. That they feel, lighter, and like they got a soundtrack to that experience that can help them to do it again, and again (Listen to Run It Up Again, and Again by Toussaint Lorenz Lol)
